Why Magnetic Knife Storage?

Knife blocks waste counter space and dull your blades. Magnetic racks keep knives accessible, safe, and sharp. Plus they look professional and can be customized to match your kitchen.

Benefits:

Materials Needed

Item Approx. Cost Buy
Neodymium magnets (1"x1/4", pack of 12) $8 Amazon
Wood board (walnut, oak, or maple 18"x3"x1") $2 Lowe's

Build Instructions

Cut and Sand Wood

Cut wood to desired length (18-24" is common). Sand all surfaces smooth. Round the edges slightly for a nicer look.

Drill Magnet Holes

Mark positions for magnets every 2-3" along the center line. Drill holes about 3/4" deep using a Forstner bit. Holes should be slightly snug fit for magnets.

Glue Magnets In Place

Put epoxy in each hole. Press magnets in flush with the wood surface. IMPORTANT: All magnets must face the same direction.

Apply Finish

Apply food-safe finish. Mineral oil is easiest - wipe on, let soak, wipe off excess. Let dry 24 hours.

Mount to Wall

Find studs. Screw through the back into studs using 2-3" screws. Use a level to ensure it's horizontal.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Magnet strength - Use neodymium magnets, not ceramic. 1" diameter x 1/4" thick is perfect
  • Wood choice - Hardwoods (walnut, maple, oak) look best and hold up to moisture
  • Double rows - For heavier knives, install two rows of magnets
  • Safety positioning - Mount high enough kids can't reach, low enough you don't have to reach up
  • Angle option - Mount at slight upward angle so knives naturally stay against magnets
